The face of Universal Curettes are oriented perpendicular to the long axis of the terminal shank, allowing for both edges of the tip to be utilized. Universal Curettes have a wider range of applications and can reduce the amount of instrument switching needed to effectively clean subgingival deposits.
Area Specific Curettes have a face that is oriented 70° in relation to the terminal shank, and allow for the proper application of only one edge. Wider application is reduced, but the tips are more ‘specific’ to each indicated application.
